Introduction

Which Europe do we want? Who do we want to be, towards ourselves, towards our neighbors and our planet? We must answer these questions together and determine our future sovereignly and freely. In the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) of the European Parliament, I am committed to giving Europeans a voice in all political decision-making processes. We are currently discussing the possibilities for a fairer electoral system and are preparing a two-year citizens’ conference, which will culminate in a European constitution.

Let us take the future of the EU into our own hands!

Never before have we had so much peace in the countries of the European Union. Never before have we been so well economically. Never before have we been so free to travel across the continent, to study and work in other countries, to find friends for life, to love, to live. In short: never before in history has it been so beautiful in Europe as it is today.

And yet it is also ugly in Europe, as it has not been for a long time. In almost all member states, authoritarian nationalists are gaining strength. In the Mediterranean, people are dying in the greatest need. And despite many promises to the contrary, the climate crisis is worsening day by day.

The European Union stands at a crossroads. Now it is up to us all to take its future into our own hands!
